🚌 Transport — Hungary
Hungary is one of the most affordable European countries for student transport if you have the correct Hungarian student documentation. Budapest, Debrecen, Szeged, Pécs, Miskolc and Győr are the main student cities, and transport discounts can be excellent.
Budapest has metro, trams, buses, trolleybuses, suburban rail and night services. The monthly Budapest student pass is much cheaper than the adult pass, but eligibility depends on valid student documentation. For MENA students, the safest document is usually a Hungarian student ID or temporary certificate issued through the university.
Hungary also has county and national passes. Discounted county passes and the discounted Hungary Pass can be extremely cheap for students and may be better than a city-only pass if you commute from outside Budapest or travel often. However, these discounts usually require a valid Hungarian student ID.
Debrecen, Szeged and Pécs also have local transport systems with student prices. Medical and engineering students in Debrecen, for example, should compare local student passes with the county or national pass depending on where they live.
Public transport is not generally free for university students in Hungary, but discounted passes can be close to symbolic prices. Do not use a discounted pass with the wrong ID. Ticket inspectors in Budapest are strict. After enrollment, ask your university how to obtain or activate the Hungarian student ID, then choose between a local pass, county pass or Hungary Pass.
