🎓 Scholarships — Hungary
Hungary is one of the most important scholarship destinations for MENA students because the Stipendium Hungaricum programme works through bilateral sending partners and covers tuition plus a monthly stipend, accommodation contribution and health insurance support. The key is that eligibility is tied to the sending partner for your citizenship.

Detailed guide
Stipendium Hungaricum - This is the major route. It is attractive because it offers tuition-free education and support for living costs, but it is not enough to ignore budgeting. The accommodation contribution may not cover full rent in Budapest. Applicants must satisfy both the Hungarian online application and the sending partner nomination rules.
Sending partner rules - The most common mistake is checking only the Hungarian portal and forgetting the home-country authority. Your country may restrict fields, levels or applicant categories. A strong application can fail if it is not nominated by the sending partner.
Bilateral State Scholarships - These are useful for shorter research stays, partial studies or summer courses. They are less famous than Stipendium Hungaricum but can help master or PhD students build a Hungarian academic connection.
Diaspora Scholarship - This is only relevant to applicants with Hungarian roots. Most MENA applicants should ignore it unless they genuinely meet the diaspora requirement.
University alternatives - If Stipendium Hungaricum is not available for your country or field, some Hungarian universities offer tuition discounts or merit awards, but these are usually less comprehensive.
Application strategy for this country
- First check whether your citizenship has a sending partner agreement and whether your intended level and field are eligible.
- Rank programmes strategically in DreamApply. A realistic second or third choice can save the application.
- Prepare a strong motivation letter connected to your home country, because sending partners often value return impact.
- Track both deadlines: the Hungarian portal deadline and your national nomination deadline.
- Budget beyond the stipend, especially for Budapest housing deposits and first-month costs.
Documents to prepare early
- Passport valid beyond the intended start date, plus scans of any second nationality if relevant.
- Bachelor or master diploma, transcripts and official grading scale. For Italy, Spain and Portugal, plan for legalisation or apostille and sworn translation if requested by the university or visa office.
- English test such as IELTS, TOEFL, PTE or Cambridge, or proof that the previous degree was taught in English when the programme accepts it.
- CV, motivation letter or statement of purpose, recommendation letters and, for PhD routes, a research proposal and supervisor match.
- Financial and family income documents when applying for need-based regional or university support, especially in Italy and some public-university routes.
- Stipendium-specific documents: medical certificate, motivation letter, language proof, school certificates, translations and any documents required by your sending partner.
