🏠 Housing — Hungary

Updated June 2026
Hungary is one of the most attractive countries for international students in Central Europe, especially because of the Stipendium Hungaricum scholarship, affordable tuition and strong universities in Budapest, Debrecen, Szeged, Pécs and Miskolc. Housing is generally cheaper than Western Europe, but Budapest has become more expensive and competitive.

How difficult is it to find student housing in Hungary?

Budapest is the hardest city because it attracts international students, workers and tourists. Debrecen, Szeged and Pécs are usually easier, but student areas can still fill quickly before September. Students should not assume dormitory places are automatic.

A 2026 Hungary accommodation guide estimates university dormitories at around €80 to €200 per month, shared private rooms in Budapest at around €350 to €550 and studios in Budapest at around €500 to €800.

University dormitories

Dormitories are the cheapest option. They may be run by the university or linked to scholarship programmes. Rooms are often shared, and facilities may be basic but affordable.

Typical prices:

Budapest University of Technology and Economics’ international mentor team lists private dormitory options, with shared beds starting around €200 per month and single rooms beginning around €400.

Private rooms and apartments

Private shared flats are common, especially in Budapest. Rent depends on district and whether utilities are included.

Approximate monthly prices:

The University of Debrecen says private accommodation rent varies depending on location, quality and number of persons or rooms, and gives a usual rent range of 120,000 to 140,000 HUF per month.

Final advice

Hungary is still affordable compared with Germany, France or the Netherlands, but Budapest is no longer extremely cheap. Apply early for dormitories and be careful with private landlords asking for cash deposits without a contract. Frequently asked questions

When should I start looking for student housing?

Start as soon as you receive your admission. In competitive cities, apply for dormitories immediately and begin searching for private rooms 2 to 4 months before arrival. Never send money before verifying the landlord, the contract and the address.

This is starter guidance and changes often — always confirm on the official source before applying.
