🚌 Transport — Spain
Spain is one of the most student-friendly countries in Europe for urban transport, especially for young people. Madrid, Barcelona, Valencia, Seville, Granada, Salamanca, Zaragoza, Bilbao and Palma all have useful systems, but discounts are regional or city-based rather than one national student pass.
Madrid is one of the best cities for students under 26 because the youth transport pass can cover metro, buses, intercity buses, light rail and Cercanías trains across the region. This is very useful for students who live outside the centre or study at campuses in Getafe, Leganés, Cantoblanco, Alcalá or Villaviciosa.
Barcelona uses the T-jove pass for people under 30, with integrated travel across ATM zones for a fixed period. It is useful for students at UB, UAB, UPF, UPC, ESADE and other institutions, particularly because students often live outside central Barcelona. Valencia has SUMA Monthly Jove for young people, covering metro, tram, EMT, MetroBus and Cercanías under the defined zones.
Spain also offers national youth travel schemes such as Verano Joven, which provides major summer discounts for eligible young residents aged 18 to 30. Renfe passes and recurring traveller schemes can also reduce the cost of regional and medium-distance rail. These programmes change, so students should verify before booking.
Public transport is not automatically free for university students in Spain, but it can be very cheap if you qualify by age, residence and region. Apply early for the transport card, especially in Madrid and Barcelona. Bring passport, NIE or TIE, proof of address, university enrollment and a payment card. For daily travel, use the local youth pass. For summer and regional travel, check Verano Joven and Renfe offers.
