🚌 Transport — Slovakia

Updated June 2026

Slovakia is a very affordable study destination for transport, especially if you qualify for student rail benefits. Bratislava, Košice, Žilina, Nitra, Trnava and Banská Bystrica are the main student cities, and the country is small enough for trains to be useful.

In Bratislava, IDS BK integrates buses, trams, trolleybuses and regional services. University students under the relevant age and study conditions can receive reduced fares, usually with a Slovak student card, ISIC or accepted transport card. Full-time students should ask their university how to activate the transport function of their student card.

The most important national benefit is zero-fare rail travel for eligible students under the ZSSK system. This can allow free train travel for students who meet age, study and residence conditions, but registration is required. You still need the correct zero-fare ticket or card; you cannot simply board without documentation.

Košice has trams and buses, while Žilina, Nitra and other university towns rely more on buses and trains. Because Slovakia is compact, free or discounted rail can be extremely valuable for weekend travel, airport connections and visits to other cities.

MENA students should prepare passport, residence document, confirmation of study, student card and photo if requested. Verify whether your residence status qualifies for zero-fare rail. Urban transport is usually discounted rather than free, while national rail can be free for eligible students after registration.
