🚌 Transport — Portugal
Portugal is one of the best European countries for young student transport savings. Lisbon, Porto, Coimbra, Braga, Aveiro and Faro have useful urban and regional networks, and many young people can access free or heavily reduced public transport if they meet the age and documentation rules.
In Lisbon, the Navegante system is the main monthly pass for metro, buses, trams, suburban trains and other transport in the metropolitan area. The under-23 pass can allow free travel for eligible young people up to age 23. This is highly valuable for students at Universidade de Lisboa, NOVA, ISCTE, Católica and Técnico.
In Porto, students use the Andante system. Normal metropolitan passes are already relatively affordable compared with many European capitals, and the national free youth pass rules can reduce the cost to zero for eligible young residents. CP also links the free youth pass to urban trains in Lisbon, Porto and Coimbra, and to some Regional and InterRegional services.
Portugal also has the Green Rail Pass for residents, which can help with broader rail travel depending on route and conditions. Students should compare local passes, CP rail options and free youth pass eligibility before paying for a monthly product.
The most important practical step is documentation. Apply early for a NIF, personalised transport card and proof of enrollment. You may need proof of age, residence, university registration and sometimes local authentication. If you qualify for the under-23 free pass, Portugal can become one of the cheapest countries in Europe for student mobility.
