Updated June 2026

Best first route: Get a NIF as early as possible, ideally before or immediately after arrival, then open a Portuguese account with passport, visa or residence permit, proof of address and student documents. A Portuguese IBAN is very useful for rent, AIMA and daily life.

  1. Before arrival: obtain a NIF if possible. Non-EU applicants outside Portugal may need a fiscal representative depending on status and procedure.
  2. Arrival week: secure proof of address in Portugal, even temporary housing if accepted by the bank.
  3. Open a bank account. ActivoBank is often popular for low fees, but branch availability and document acceptance vary. Traditional banks may be easier if you need in-person support.
