🏦 Bank account — Norway

Updated June 2026

Best first route: Use the university deposit account for the study permit if you do not yet have a Norwegian account, then open your own Norwegian account after arrival once you receive a national identity number or D-number.

1. What the bank account is needed for

2. Visa finance rule and blocked account position

3. If a blocked or deposit account is needed, how to set it up

  1. Accept admission and follow your university instructions for the deposit account. Do not transfer money to a generic university account unless the international office confirms the exact account and reference.
  2. Transfer the required subsistence amount and, if relevant, tuition according to the university and UDI checklist.
  3. Obtain the deposit confirmation from the university. This is used in the UDI application.
  4. After arrival, register with the police/tax authorities as instructed and obtain a D-number or national identity number.
  5. Open a Norwegian bank account. The university can then transfer your deposited funds to your own account according to its refund process.
  6. Keep enough personal funds on an international card because the deposit may not be released until your own account exists.

4. Fastest route to a usable account, card and IBAN or local account number

  1. Before visa: check UDI amount, tuition requirement and university deposit-account process.
  2. Before arrival: bring an international card and funds for at least 1 to 2 months of living costs.
  3. Arrival week: complete police and tax registration steps required for an identity number or D-number.
  4. Once you have the ID number or D-number: apply to a bank. University cities often have specific branches used to international students.
  5. Ask the bank about BankID, debit card, online banking and whether your residence duration qualifies you for full digital services.
  6. Submit the bank details to your university to release the remaining deposit.

9. Recommended timeline

  1. Before UDI application: arrange the university deposit account and transfer funds.
  2. Before arrival: prepare funds for the waiting period.
  3. Week 1 in Norway: complete registration and request D-number/national ID as instructed.
  4. Weeks 2 to 8: apply for bank account and card. Processing can vary significantly.
  5. After account opens: submit bank details to university for deposit release.
  6. After BankID: update digital services and set up recurring payments.
