🛂 Student visa — Germany

Updated June 2026
Germany remains one of the strongest destinations for non-EU students because public universities are low-cost, research quality is high, and the post-study work pathway is clear.

Who needs this visa?

Most non-EU students need a national student visa before entering Germany for long-term study. The visa is later converted into a residence permit after arrival in Germany.

Main documents

A typical application includes university admission, passport, visa form, academic documents, health insurance, proof of accommodation if requested, and proof of financial resources. Make it in Germany states that students must prove they can cover living costs and that a blocked account can show a minimum of €1,091 per month as of 2026, or students may use another accepted proof such as a declaration of commitment.

Application process

First, secure admission or conditional admission. Second, prepare funding proof, often through a blocked account. Third, apply at the German embassy or consulate. Fourth, travel to Germany after approval. Fifth, register your address and apply for a residence permit at the local foreigners authority.

Working while studying

Germany allows international students to work during their studies, but students should check the current annual day or hour limits and whether internships count. Work should not interfere with study progress.

After graduation

Germany has one of Europe's clearest post-study routes. Make it in Germany states that third-country graduates can obtain a residence permit valid for up to 18 months to look for qualified employment, and during this period they may take up any type of job. The permit is not renewable. Berlin's official service portal also describes the job-seeking residence permit as usually issued for 18 months and not extendable beyond that for further job search.

Best for

Germany is best for engineering, research, computer science, manufacturing, climate technology, and students who want a lower-tuition destination with a serious employment pathway after graduation.
