Scholarships for Syrian Students 2027/2028

Last updated: July 2026

Syrian students have several real scholarship options for 2027/2028, but eligibility must be checked carefully every year. Some scholarships explicitly include Syria, while others are open worldwide or depend on annual country lists.

This guide focuses on scholarships that either officially included Syria in the latest available cycle or are open to international students worldwide.

Best scholarships for Syrian students

1. Stipendium Hungaricum, Hungary

Stipendium Hungaricum is one of the strongest European scholarship options for Syrian students. The latest official partner information listed Syria as eligible for full-degree bachelor’s, master’s, one-tier master’s and doctoral studies in any academic field, as well as partial study options.

This makes Hungary a serious option for Syrian students applying for:

Students must still check the annual Sending Partner process for Syria and any local requirements.

2. Erasmus Mundus Joint Masters

Erasmus Mundus is open to excellent students worldwide, so Syrian students can apply if they meet the programme requirements. Erasmus Mundus scholarships can cover participation costs and contribute to travel, visa and living allowance.

This is especially strong for Syrian students applying to master’s programmes in:

3. DAAD scholarships, Germany

Syrian students can explore DAAD scholarships through Germany’s scholarship database. DAAD EPOS is particularly relevant for applicants from developing and newly industrialised countries with at least two years of professional experience.

This is a good route for Syrian applicants with work experience in NGOs, humanitarian work, engineering, public health, education, water, energy, development or public administration.

4. MAECI scholarships, Italy

Syria appears in the official eligible country list for the Italian Government MAECI scholarship. MAECI can support master’s, PhD, research, AFAM arts programmes and Italian language or culture courses, depending on the annual call.

Italy can be a practical option for Syrian students, especially if combined with regional aid or low tuition programmes.

5. Slovakia Government Scholarships

The Embassy of Slovakia in Beirut published information stating that Slovak Government Scholarships for 2026/2027 were available for students from Lebanon, Iraq, Jordan and Syria for bachelor’s, master’s and PhD studies.

This is a useful low-cost European route for Syrian students, but applicants must check the new 2027/2028 call and country list.

6. Slovakia Talent Scholarship

Slovakia’s Talent Scholarship is broader because it is for international students worldwide. The latest call offered up to €15,000 total, paid as €5,000 per academic year, for selected bachelor’s, combined bachelor-master and master’s studies.

This can be useful for Syrian students applying to Slovak universities, especially in selected priority fields.

7. France Eiffel Scholarship

Eiffel is open to foreign students nominated by French institutions. It supports master’s and PhD candidates. Students cannot apply directly to Campus France. The French university must submit the application.

Syrian students with strong academic profiles can consider Eiffel, especially in engineering, ecological transition, law, political science, economics and management.

8. GKS, South Korea

There is direct evidence that Syrian applicants were included in the Korean Global Korea Scholarship undergraduate route through a Korean Embassy notice in Lebanon for the 2026 GKS Undergraduate Degree Program for Syrians.

For 2027, Syrian students must check the Korean Embassy responsible for Syrian applications and the annual GKS country list. GKS is competitive but can be a strong route for technology, engineering, Korean studies, public policy and science.

9. MEXT Scholarship, Japan

MEXT is the Japanese Government scholarship. General MEXT rules require applicants to have the nationality of a country with diplomatic relations with Japan, and applications are generally submitted through the responsible Japanese embassy or consulate.

Syrian students should check which Japanese mission handles Syrian MEXT applications for the relevant year.

Scholarship routes Syrian students should be careful with

The latest AECID Africa-Med Master call included several Middle Eastern and North African countries, but Syria was not listed among the eligible countries in that call. Do not promote AECID Africa-Med for Syrian students unless a future call explicitly adds Syria.
