GKS Scholarship for Arab Students 2027: Embassy Track vs University Track

Last updated: 3 July 2026

For many Arab students, the Global Korea Scholarship is one of the most attractive fully funded scholarships outside Europe. It can support undergraduate, master’s, doctoral and research study in South Korea. The most confusing part is choosing between the Embassy Track and the University Track. For the 2026 graduate cycle, the Korean government planned to invite 2,000 international students through GKS for graduate degrees. Applicants were required to apply either through a Korean Embassy in their country of citizenship or directly to one designated university. For Arab students applying in 2027, the same general structure is expected, but the exact countries, quotas, deadlines, universities and documents must be checked in the official 2027 call.

What is GKS?

GKS is Korea’s government scholarship degree programme for outstanding international students. Study in Korea describes it as a government-invited scholarship programme designed to invite talented students from around the world and build international education networks. For Arab students, GKS can be especially interesting because Korea is strong in technology, engineering, artificial intelligence, electronics, robotics, business, Korean studies, public policy, agriculture, media and cultural industries.

Which Arab students can apply?

Eligibility depends on the NIIED-designated country list and the annual call. Arab students should check:

Arab applicants may come from countries such as Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon, Palestine, Syria, Egypt, Sudan, Morocco, Tunisia, Algeria, Libya, Yemen, Saudi Arabia, Oman, Bahrain, Qatar, Kuwait or the United Arab Emirates, but eligibility and quotas must be verified every year. NIIED’s GKS information states that applicants must hold citizenship of NIIED-designated countries invited to participate in GKS. Korean citizens and Korean dual citizens are not allowed to apply.

Embassy Track explained

The Embassy Track means you apply through the Korean Embassy in your country of citizenship. The embassy conducts the first round of selection. Selected candidates are then reviewed by NIIED and later by Korean universities.

Advantages of Embassy Track

The main advantage is that Embassy Track applicants may be able to choose more than one university, depending on the guidelines. This gives more flexibility. If one university does not accept the candidate, another might. Embassy Track can be good for Arab students who:

Disadvantages of Embassy Track

Embassy Track can be very competitive because applicants compete at the country level. Some countries may have very few seats. The embassy may also have strict document requirements, short deadlines and interview stages. Arab students should not wait for the embassy announcement to start preparing. Some embassies open the call for only a short period.

University Track explained

The University Track means you apply directly to a GKS-designated university. The university reviews applications and recommends selected candidates to NIIED.

Advantages of University Track

University Track can be better if you have a strong fit with a specific university, department, professor or research topic. It is especially useful for:

Disadvantages of University Track

The main disadvantage is that you usually apply to one university under this track. If that university does not recommend you, your chance may end for that cycle. This means programme selection must be careful.

Which track is better for Arab students?

There is no universal answer. The better track depends on the applicant.

How Arab students should choose

Choose Embassy Track if:

You want more than one university option, your country has a reasonable quota, and you are confident in interviews. This is also good if you want to keep flexibility.

Choose University Track if:

You have researched departments carefully, found a strong programme match, and can show why that specific university is perfect for your goals. For graduate applicants, University Track becomes much stronger if your research proposal aligns with the department.

The exact 2027 timeline will vary by country and university, but students should prepare using this model:

October to December 2026Research Korean universities and fields
December 2026Prepare CV, passport and transcripts
January 2027Draft personal statement and study plan
February 2027Watch embassy and Study in Korea notices
February to March 2027Submit GKS graduate applications
March to April 2027First round selection
April to June 2027NIIED and university selection

Undergraduate applicants should check notices earlier, often around September of the previous year.

Required documents

Arab applicants usually need:

Expected graduates may be allowed to apply, but they must submit final graduation documents by the official deadline. A 2026 GKS-G embassy notice stated that expected graduates had to submit their official graduation certificate and final transcript to NIIED by 31 July 2026 or their acceptance would be cancelled.

Common mistakes by Arab applicants

  1. Choosing the track without understanding the difference.
  2. Applying to universities that do not offer the desired field.
  3. Writing too much about Korean culture and not enough about academics.
  4. Submitting weak recommendation letters.
  5. Ignoring embassy-specific rules.
  6. Missing document notarisation or translation rules.
  7. Choosing a field unrelated to previous studies.
  8. Not explaining the post-graduation plan.

How to write a strong GKS application

Your personal statement should show who you are, what you studied, what you achieved and why Korea is the right place. Your study plan should be specific. Mention courses, labs, professors, research themes or industry strengths. Explain how the degree will help your country or region. For Arab students, a strong theme could be:
