JASSO Scholarship

JASSO scholarships support privately financed international students in Japan. JASSO states that applicants must be enrolled as regular students in eligible Japanese institutions or preparatory courses.

Required documents

• University nomination or application form.
• Passport.
• Residence card, if already in Japan.
• Student status proof.
• Academic transcripts.
• Enrolment certificate.
• Bank account information.
• Language proof, if required.
• Financial need documents, if required.
• Statement of purpose, if required by university.

Eligible nationalities

• International students studying in Japan.
• Privately financed students.
• Students enrolled in eligible Japanese institutions.
• Exchange students may be eligible under separate JASSO exchange support.
• Students receiving other large scholarships may be excluded.

How to apply

• Usually apply through the Japanese university.
• Ask the university international office after admission.
• Some JASSO support is awarded through university nomination.
